One of life's little irritants is undoubtedly turning on the shower, only to find a dribble of water emerging. After bemoaning how long it will take to wash their hair, most people will know that the problem is low water pressure. But what causes it, and how can it be fixed?

The most common cause of low water pressure is simply a build-up of mineral deposits – in particular, the dreaded limescale. If you live in a hard water area, this build-up is inevitable, but it is fairly easy to deal with. There are plenty of specific products on the market to remove limescale, and you can add to their effectiveness by using a small brush (or even toothbrush) to give showerheads and faucets a really good scrub! For a cheaper option, try using vinegar to remove deposits – it's surprisingly effective.
If this doesn't fix the problem, you'll need to consider other options. Firstly, check your pipes for any cracks or leaks. A quick way to check for leaks, if you have a water meter, is to shut off your main water valve and mark the meter reading. Leave the water off for a few hours, and then re-check the meter. If your water usage has increased, you have a leak. Don't forget to make sure your water valve is turned back on fully to ensure full water pressure.
Sometimes though, even the best DIY-er must admit defeat. If you're still experiencing low water pressure, you'll need to call in a professional plumber for help. They can advise you on fitting pumps or pressure regulators (to help boost water pressure), and can check for erosion of pipes or major blockage problems. And, with the right treatments, you'll soon be back to full pressure showers!
