If you don't have the number of a good quality plumber to hand, you really should consider finding one. Whether you ask a friend, relative or neighbour to recommend a plumber to you is unimportant – just make sure you get the number of a good one.

But what makes a good plumber? Well, ideally, you want someone who can turn their hand to an aspect of plumbing or heating, so you'll need someone who can fix a dripping tap or install a whole new central heating system for you (including all pipe work, radiators and a new central heating boiler).

A quality plumber will also be able to install washing machines, plumb in dish washers, fit outdoor taps, and install brand new bathrooms. Some may offer an emergency service, meaning they're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can expect to pay a premium of you call an emergency plumber out during the middle of the night, though.
Many plumbers will offer a free call out service, meaning you will only pay for the time they are working on your home's plumbing. They may also offer a free estimate for any work you want doing, or, for smaller jobs, they may just charge an hourly rate. You can usually agree up front (or even sometimes over the phone) if you know what work needs to be done. Failing that, try and agree a price before any work begins, as this will avoid any unwanted surprises when the plumber hands you his bill at the end of the job.
When choosing a plumber, try to get one who is as local as possible. Also aim to find one who is a member of Gas Safe (or one who is Gas Safe registered. This means that they are competent to work with gas in your home. It is illegal, and extremely dangerous for a plumber to work with gas if they are not Gas Safe registered plumbers. Ask them for evidence of their registration with Gas Safe before you let them work on any gas appliance (including ovens, hobs, gas fires or central heating boilers)
